Praise for Cowdenbeath school pupils from inspectors
14 FebruaryFollowing a recent visit to St Bride’s RC Primary School and Nursery Class in Cowdenbeath, inspectors have praised pupils who are proud of their school, while saying there is still ‘room for improvement.
In the report, the inspectors highlighted key strengths of the school, including:
• The positive impact of the head teacher’s work on ensuring a supportive and caring ethos.
• Well-behaved, polite children who are proud of their school.
• Effective support for meeting the learning and pastoral needs of children who require significant help.
The report concluded: “As a result of our inspection findings we think that school needs additional support and more time to make necessary improvements. Our District Inspector along with the local authority will discuss the most appropriate support in order to build capacity for improvement, and will maintain contact to monitor progress. We will return to evaluate aspects of provision and the progress in improving provision within two years of the publication of this letter. We will then issue another letter to parents on the extent to which the school has improved. In that letter we will inform you if we are going to carry out a further inspection visit.”
“We discussed with staff and the education authority how they might continue to improve the school and nursery class. This is what we agreed with them.
• Improve the curriculum taking full account of Curriculum for Excellence.
• Increase children’s responsibility for and awareness of their own learning.
• Raise children’s attainment in literacy and numeracy across the curriculum and track all aspects of their progress.
• Improve and focus approaches to self-evaluation and management of change on improving learning, achievement and the curriculum.
