Cowdenbeath pubs are 'Best Bar None' in police awards

  • The Fife Best Bar None winners 2011

Five licensed premises in Cowdenbeath have been named ‘Best Bar None’ at an awards ceremony hosted by Fife Constabulary.

Partners pub, Wee Jimmies, The Dunvegan Bar, Partners club and the Woodside Hotel were all amongst the award winners at the ceremony.

There were three local winners in the pub category – Dunvegan, Jimmies and Partners, while the Woodside Hotel won in the bar category, and Partners club in the club section.

This was the sixth annual multi agency initiative hosted by Fife Constabulary, where 24 licensed premises were accredited as being 'Best Bar None'.

A scheme to recognise and reward well run pubs, bars and clubs which demonstrates high standards in promoting safety and responsible drinking has shown its best results since beginning six-years ago. The scheme covers Town Centre licensed premises in Dunfermline, Cowdenbeath, Kirkcaldy, Glenrothes, Leven, Cupar, St Andrews, Anstruther, Rosyth & Inverkeithing.

The awards ceremony was held on at Fife Constabulary Headquarters in Glenrothes with Councillor Andrew Rodger, the chair of Fife Licensing Board presenting the awards to the representatives of the 24 Best Bar None premises.

The Best Bar None initiative is led by Fife Constabulary with other partners providing valuable support including Fife Fire and Rescue Service, Environmental Services Trading Standards department, the Licensed Trade and the Scottish Business Crime Centre. Diageo are the national sponsor of the initiative.

An assessment is carried out at the premises by a trained assessor who checks on issues such as public safety, drug and search policy, irresponsible drinks promotions, crime prevention measures , risk assessment and staff training among a number of other relevant issues. To become accredited applicants have to score points in the essential sections. The information is then put before an independent panel of judges who decide on the level of the award issued.

PAUL IRVINE says

Awesome news and it just goes to show that the "redneck" stereotypes of the likes of Cowdenbeath, Kelty etc have absolutely no foundations whatsoever.
I used to go out a lot in Edinburgh and there was always more hassle across there than I've ever witnessed in the town I now call home!
