Cowdenbeath all set for a blooming great horticultural show
23 AugustCowdenbeath's annual horticultural show pulls in visitors from Fife and beyond to compete alongside local primary schools, church groups and individuals - and will this year be in Trinity Church on Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th September.
The two day event has 19 different sections not including the primary and nursery sections, which you can compete in or simply watch and enjoy. Crafts, produce, vegetables, pot plants, floral decoration, flowers and 15 different classes for children are some of the categories on offer.
Local primary schools are creating displays for their allocated alcoves. As part of Celebrating Fife 2010, the theme this year is how the children see Fife, and to accompany their collages they will produce a poem about Fife, and a greetings card based on Celebrating Fife 2010.
The main event in the horticultural show is the much admired floral centrepiece. This year's theme is Celebrating Fife and with the exhibit being a model of the Forth Rail Bridge and a three metre photograph of the Forth Road Bridge as a background it is fittingly being called Gateway to Fife.
The model will represent the Forth Rail Bridge and will measure over ten feet in length. It will be a working model with two lines and a running train. Currently a work in progress, part of the challenge for this centre-piece will be the introduction of suitable floral artistry into the display.
George Bird is the show's main organiser and is looking forward to this year's event: "Because of the Celebrating Fife funding we are able to include extra classes. While all the new classes are very important I feel part of the celebration is enjoying, not only growing fresh healthy food, but eating it also.
"Therefore, we have introduced two special classes which are about food with prize values of £25 for first, £15 for second, and £10 for the third prize. The vegetable class asks for three types out of a list of six, and the Afternoon Tea for Two is what you would expect to get in Fife which, it is hoped, will encourage talented bakers to take part in."
The Horticultural Show will be held in Trinity Church in Sinclair Drive, Cowdenbeath on Saturday, 11th September from 2pm to 5pm; prizegiving is at 2.30pm and is held in the church, which enables everyone to have a seat. On Sunday, 12th September the show is open between 12.30pm and 4pm. Admission costs 50p for adults and 20p for children.
