Bunny trio abandoned in Cowdenbeath woods

  • Abandoned: Mrs Buns, Speedy and Little Lamb were found roaming loose in the woods
  • Happy bunnies: The rabbits were in good condition

Three pet bunnies have been found abandoned in woods in Cowdenbeath.

A member of the public spotted the all female domestic crossbreed rabbits roaming loose at around 10am on Saturday, February 11 in the Hill of Beath area.

She managed to gather them up before calling the Scottish SPCA for help. All three rabbits are now being cared for at the charity’s Angus, Tayside and Fife Animal Rescue and Rehoming Centre at Petterden, Dundee. They have been named Speedy, Little Lamb and Mrs Buns.

Senior Inspector John Chisholm said: "The rabbits are well handled and in fairly good condition so they've clearly been someone's pets.

"The spot they were found in is dense woods and accessible from a lay-by at the roadside. It's likely that the rabbits had been left there quite recently as they hadn't gone far from the roadside and they had all remained close together.

"If they had been outdoors for more than a few days we'd expect them to be in poor condition or to have been attacked by predators or possibly even hit by passing traffic. Thankfully they were found before coming to any harm and we hope to find them all good homes."

Abandoning an animal is an offence which carries stiff penalties and anyone found guilty of doing so can expect to be banned from keeping animals for a fixed period or life.

Anyone with information relating to the rabbits or wishing to rehome them should call the Scottish SPCA Animal Helpline on 03000 999 999.
