Blue Brazil's petition to redevelop Central Park
12 AprilThe Blue Brazil have launched their campaign in earnest to redevelop Central Park and move to a new community stadium at Broad Street - and they're asking fans to sign a petition supporting them.
The petition was available to sign in the away end at Saturday's first division clash with Raith Rovers. It is also available at Central Park, and online here: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/PD99LLH
The sale and redevelopment of Central Park is to go to fund the new park at Broad Street - once owners the Brewster brothers have recouped their investment in the club. But that depends on planning permission being granted for redeveloping Central Park - you can read more about that elsewhere on s1cowdenbeath.
Chairman Donald Findlay QC said on Blue Brazil Online: “Staying at Central Park in the long-term is not an option. Central Park has a proud history but, unfortunately, it no longer meets the needs of the football club while the running costs are extremely high.
"The sustainable future of the Club is dependant on relocating to a purpose-built, low maintenance and income-generating-facility within Cowdenbeath.
“This is a key part of our vision to see the Club continue to flourish on the field and acting as a hub for many community activities. The proposal would safeguard the future of the football club as a community asset and it would also ensure a positive legacy from the redevelopment of Central Park for the people of Cowdenbeath."
Scott Brewster is a director of both Cowdenbeath FC and Innovate (Cowdenbeath) Ltd, the company which plans to redevelop Central Park.
He said: "The funding of the project will come primarily from the redevelopment of Central Park. The Brewsters, as the owners, will have to be repaid their initial investment, but the surplus funds along with external funding will go towards the new facility."
The club's petition also opposes development at North End Park and land at Lumphinnans. Vico Properties plc plans to build a 30,000 sq ft supermarket at North End Park and a sporting facility at Gagarin Way and Hope Street in Lumphinnans as part of its plan, according to The Courier.
Last month rumours that Cowdenbeath had explored a merger with Edinburgh Amateur side Spartans were denied by David Brewster to the BBC.
The future of the ground is a major move for Cowdenbeath FC and one of the most contentious issues to have faced the club in years. If you want to have your say in a public place - do it here!
