Blue Brazil's petition to redevelop Central Park

  • Home support gate at Central Park

The Blue Brazil have launched their campaign in earnest to redevelop Central Park and move to a new community stadium at Broad Street - and they're asking fans to sign a petition supporting them.

The petition was available to sign in the away end at Saturday's first division clash with Raith Rovers. It is also available at Central Park, and online here: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/PD99LLH

The sale and redevelopment of Central Park is to go to fund the new park at Broad Street - once owners the Brewster brothers have recouped their investment in the club. But that depends on planning permission being granted for redeveloping Central Park - you can read more about that elsewhere on s1cowdenbeath.

Chairman Donald Findlay QC said on Blue Brazil Online: “Staying at Central Park in the long-term is not an option. Central Park has a proud history but, unfortunately, it no longer meets the needs of the football club while the running costs are extremely high.

"The sustainable future of the Club is dependant on relocating to a purpose-built, low maintenance and income-generating-facility within Cowdenbeath.

“This is a key part of our vision to see the Club continue to flourish on the field and acting as a hub for many community activities. The proposal would safeguard the future of the football club as a community asset and it would also ensure a positive legacy from the redevelopment of Central Park for the people of Cowdenbeath."

Scott Brewster is a director of both Cowdenbeath FC and Innovate (Cowdenbeath) Ltd, the company which plans to redevelop Central Park.

He said: "The funding of the project will come primarily from the redevelopment of Central Park. The Brewsters, as the owners, will have to be repaid their initial investment, but the surplus funds along with external funding will go towards the new facility."

The club's petition also opposes development at North End Park and land at Lumphinnans. Vico Properties plc plans to build a 30,000 sq ft supermarket at North End Park and a sporting facility at Gagarin Way and Hope Street in Lumphinnans as part of its plan, according to The Courier

Last month rumours that Cowdenbeath had explored a merger with Edinburgh Amateur side Spartans were denied by David Brewster to the BBC.

The future of the ground is a major move for Cowdenbeath FC and one of the most contentious issues to have faced the club in years. If you want to have your say in a public place - do it here!

After attending the Meeting in the town house I left with disgust at the three S N P members, in particular Mrs. Bain, when they were told that some official had not consulted the Sports Council Scotland regarding this plan and this would have to be held up, she played to her captive audience who were there to see this going through, they tried to get this pushed through but thanks to a strong Chairman, this was delayed for a further month. Councillor Maxwell had the guts to declare an interest from the start. I will be the first to admit that Cowdenbeath F C owners are on a serious catch up as they have left this late to get the planning permission, this planning permission for the northend site if it gives through will not benefit Cowdenbeath as far as sport is concerned, this should not be agreed until the Central Park plans have been discussed in full, this has more in the plans for the people of Cowdenbeath, than the one the three S N P Councillor’s want to take away from Cowdenbeath.

The Planners have made it clear there will be only one Super Store for Cowdenbeath, why rush this through when we the people of Cowdenbeath have the chance to develop our Town Centre.

At the next meeting of the Loch Group after the antics of the S N P they should be open to the public and declare an interest, and that being no interest in Cowdenbeath.

Cowdenbeath are loosing a sporting facility that is not being replaced in Cowdenbeath with this Vico plan, the people of Cowdenbeath should be consulted on this future development in our town, we should not have sporting facilties taken away from our Town.

Should Vico not consult with Cowdenbeath F C as they have not as yet contacted any member of the Club.

The Planners have said they agree on a supermrket coming to Cowdenbeath, the Counciollors have said that there is a leagal time on this Vico planning permission and have to act on this, they had the same situation when they refused against the planners advice the Lidl aspplication

There are 2 issues here:

1 - The removal of one of the historical and better football facilites from the town, with no direct replacement within the town.

2 - The development of the town centre, which has decayed for a number of years.

Regardless of your viewpoint with the private ownership fo Cowdenbeath FC, the risk is there for everyone to see that the town may not have a football club in the next couple of years if nothing is done and the local planners need to look at the long term effect that this will have on the town.

An ideal solution would be some sort of joint venture on the football side, where the foundation of a Community Football Academy which is attached directly to the new stadium(wherever that would be located) which would benefit the club and the local community would have something they could be proud of.

The demand for artificial surfaces is high in this area with people travelling further afield to use good facilities. Doing this would bring people in to the town to use great facilities for football.

A supermarket on the periphery of the High Street fails miserably as access is only beneficial to those staying nearby or for those who have transport. Locating it away from the main shopping area fragments shoppers and local businesses will suffer. It is a must that the location of this development is re-thought. Not necessarily to go at Central Park but somewhere more central to the High Street.

The focus must be on developing the centre of the town first, then work outwards. By committing themselves to this, the town has a chance for survival and a foundation to build upon for the future.

I have to agree with Stuart.

As a fan of Cowdenbeath and a local resident since my youth Cowdenbeath FC has and will always be a centrepiece for the town.

By backing the clubs plans to relocate and redevelop the site, I believe that the town will as a whole will be better off on two fronts.

The local football club will have a better environment to thrive in and the local community can reap the financial and "feel good" rewards of a redeveloped town.

This all makes sense all it needs is backing from the local community and the local government.
