Remember Coaledge Loch

by Just Jock

Who remembers Coaledge was a small village near Crossgates you used to turn right and drive down towards Fordell Quarry and over the hill was a bonnie wee loch by roadside had great big trout and perch in it, cant find it anywhere, surely not ravished by the opencast coal rapists again fed up with wee villages and nice areas dissappearing for making others richer.Village of Masterton was first to disappear, then Fordell, whats up with the powers to be is everything being destroyed wont be long till Cowdenbeath is gone and becomes part of Dunfermline

Morning John

There is a book published in 1952, based in Coaledge-

"Behind the Diamond Panes" by Robert Holman, published 1952.

Regarding the loch, there is one showing up on Google Earth, NNE of Coaledge and SSW of Cuttlehill Farm, slightly nearer the farm than the mid-way point. In the satellite shot.

It was a sunny day with  a decided breeze, resulting in a very ruffled surface, giving a silvered appearance. The "Imagery" Date is "1/1/1999" (bottom-left corner).

However, descriptively, you seem to be heading towards Goat Quarry (towards Aberdour); and older maps show some lochs which have disappeared as a result of that quarry, when viewed on Google Earth. (I had not realised the extent of the Goat Quaryy until doing this check.)

I know Cuttlehill Farm area well from the 'auld days' Family Nelson had that farm..I went to school with Andy Nelson.

The 'loch' you see on the farm land is just off the farm road to Cuttlehill ...but this is hardly a loch; just a big pond really that catches surface water.

We used to dive into a big quarry type pond off the Aberdour road back in the 1950.s. Had to go across fields to get to it but it was steep sided and the sides were all covered in boulders. Dangerous place by today's standards ..but we didna mind back then. That water was always freezing!

Found a wee loch on Google Earth that could be in the right place for the one your speaking about.

Take the back road from Coaledge through Fordell village and towards Aberdour. Before getting to Aberdour, at Brick Row, there is a small road going off to the right. Follow this and the loch is on right hand side of this road before you reach the A921 (coast road through Aberdour) Just by the entrance drive to a house called 'Cockairnie Cottage'

The loch shows as a big area of green on Google Earth and it is located to the north of the A921 directly north from the eastern end of Dalgety Bay town. It has phot indexes of 'Otters on the Loch'

Alistair Allcroft says

Last thing I wrote should have read OTTERSON LOCH! not 'otters on the loch!'

Who's a wally?

Alex Dow says

I've been across Otterston Loch the hard way, did not get wet at all, no need to swim, simply walked over!

It was back about 1970 and the loch was frozen hard, with several skaters present.

Memories, Nostalgia & History

History doesn't have to be in black & white

Your memory of a local character or a school photo from the last ten years can be just as interesting as wars and Victorians.
