Does anyone know where it was

by Just Jock

I was at a bootsale last year and came accross an old pocket watch, I threw it in a drawer and finally decide to look at it, I opened it up and inside It is signed David Harley, Watchmaker Cowdenbeath and Dunfermline, has anyone any idea where his workshop was.dont suppose anyone is living as watch was made in 1872...

I haven't followed up fully; but in the 1861 Census on Scotland's People, there is David Harley, aged 16, "Watchmakers Ap", living with his parents at Pittencrieff Street Dunfermline., born "Fifeshire Dunfermline".

His parents are on the previous page (no Credits left) but on the LDS Family Search site, they would appear to be Alexander Harley and Jean Hutchison. Siblings are Anne Harley b 1839 and Alexander Harley b 1841, on both Census and LDS FS information.

David probably died in Dunfermline in 1921, aged 76 - needs checking.

Memories, Nostalgia & History

History doesn't have to be in black & white

Your memory of a local character or a school photo from the last ten years can be just as interesting as wars and Victorians.
