Demolished Church

by Alistair Allcroft

Does anyone remember what the name of the church was that was in the open space just down from the old Co-op buildings at the Fountain?

There is a car park there now with an entrance off the High Street just by the pedestrian crossing.

Our Boys Brigade company 1st Cowdenebath used to meet in the hall behind this church every week during the 1950's.

Our Company Commander was Captain Will Frame....a truly great man to be with when we were growing up.

The church you are referring to was known as the Guthrie Church. I went there as a child in the early 1950's. I remember receiving gifts (chocolate in a metal box) at the coronation but not a lot else.

DIANE MCLEAN says

The church was called "THE GUTHRIE CHURCH)

Now what was the name of the church on the corner of Natal Place and Broad Street?

On closing it became Spowart's, then was demolished to be replaced by the (now) "Gordon's Chemist" and a house?

Sharon Dewar says

As far as I am aware this was called the West Church and replaced the Free Church in Factory which was subsequently Carmichaels Blacksmiths - The West Church congregation moved into the 'new' West Church in Sinclair drive in the late 1960's which is now called the Trinity church after the closure of Cairns and Hill of Beath Churches.

Just to note as well that The Free Church was originally built in 1862 and eventually demolished around 7 years ago.  Shame it was knocked down as it was the oldest existing building within the town boundary.  The oldest at the moment is the shell of the Crown Hotel which dates from 1868.

I dont remember what the name of the church was, But I lived in Natal place from the age of 4 (1948). We then moved to Chapel Street  around 8 years later.

John Carr says

The church on the corner of Natal Place and Broad Street was the West Parish Church also known as the West Church. In 1968, the Congregation moved to a new Church of the same name in Sinclair Drive.

History doesn't have to be in black & white

Your memory of a local character or a school photo from the last ten years can be just as interesting as wars and Victorians.
