Cornfield Place on Google Maps

by Alistair Allcroft

Hi Alex Dow,

Found Cornfield Place on Google Maps quite easily.

Off Foulford Road,

Into Leuchatsbeath Drive

right into Johnston Park

1st right is Cornfield Place.

I don't know if this is true 'on the ground' though!

Alistair.

Morning Alistair

That is MY VERY POINT - CORNFIELD PLACE has NEVER been the Name of that location!!!

Nor has any part of the Johnston Park Estate or the others in the vicinity had a street of that name, ie Cornfield Place,

To my knowledge, Cornfield Place only exists on those mapping systems - NEVER on the ground.

Myself and my family are the FIRST and CONTINUOUS residents in Johnston Park, moving in to the former Showhouse on Tuesday, 23rd April 1968.

We knew the Architect, William Jessop (later Regional Manager North) over several years; and many of the builders, who had a work site on what is now the external Nursery Area of Foulford School. There was the Tractor Driver who had a habit of overturning his tractor.

So we have 43 years continuous knowledge of the area, my lady-wife was also the District Nursing Sister for 31 years; and never encountered such a place in Cowdenbeath.

We had originally been allocated #80; but its close proximity to the unfinished patio group of 81 to 85, was such nthat the SSHA changed that to #30, thus leading to the closure of the Showhouse. I still have a copy of the Showhouse Brochure; and for some years up to about 1975, we would have callers wishing to view the interior, being led to believe by the continued use of that Btochure, that #30 was still a Showhouse.

The whole estate including the approach road (now Leuchatsbeath Drive) from Foulford Road, was called the Johnston Park Estate and Johnston Park.

About two or three years later, the approach road was renamed to Leuchatsbeath Drive.

At that time, it terminated by #85 Johnston Park, being gradually extended in segments to cover the later school, Foulford Primary (1976), and abutting estates, Craigsbeath Court (about 1978), Kirkton Place and Southfield, until about 1992, it reached its present full length, giving direct access from Foulford Road to Perth Road.

Royal Mail is the Official Source of all UK Post Codes.

If you look up KY4 9AZ and KY4 9BA, the two for this geographic area, both are for Johnston Park, no mention of Cornfield Place.

KY4 9AZ covers #1 to #50 Johnston Park, consecutively

KY4 9BA covers #51 to #85 Johnston Park, consecutively with the exceptions of #69 to #76 inclusive. These were either never built or there were problems with the two intended blocks. The intended locations were the gap towards the northerly point of JP, where Kirkton Place, Southfield, Glenfield and Johnston Park meet.

Working the other way, try to find on that official Royal Mail site, the Post Code for Cornfield Place, Cowdenbeath, you'll find that it does not exist on the Royal Mail Post Code database.

Royal Mail Web site -

Postcode Finder -

Cornfield Place

Cowdenbeath

Response -

"Unfortunately we could not find this address. Please check it. If the address is correct but we still can’t find it, please read the help below to find out what to do."

I have also checked all of the partial Postcodes that show up on Streetmap, when searching for a street name starting Cornfield, ie Street, Place, Avenue, Crescent etc.

None of those have Postcodes in any way resembling KY4.

Specifically, the three "Cornfield Place" results are-

Cornfield Place, Livingston, West Lothian, EH54

Cornfield Place, Rowley Regis, West Midlands, B_65

Cornfield Place, Turriff, Aberdeenshire, AB53

So where does this demonstrably erroneous mapping error come from???

Alistair and others may be interested to know that just yesterday, 22nd May 2011, I received an e-mail from the Mapping Company involved, stating that it was removing "Cornfield Place" from the map, as it had followed up my June 2008 e-mail about the error and agreed that this CP did not exist.

However, the small map accompanying that e-mail showed a new error - the farm TRACK from Perth Road to the former Leuchatsbeath FARM has been named by that company "Canniesburn Drive"!

In further rsearching this, I have found three streets which may not be well-known today, as they have been totally demolished.

Mungalls Street,

From Foulford Road at the Beath High School Entrance and former Janitors' houses, over present Tennis Courts and basically to about the entrance area of the 2004 school building.

Shamrock Place.

From Foulford road just to the east of the older block with mail box, down in to the present Beath High Playing Field, about half the length of Mungalls Street. There may have been a short, angled, extension, towards Kirk o' Beath.

Harvey Street.

The present open area within Old Perth Road, Stenhouse Street, George Street and Rae Street, entrance leading of Rae Street, as at present. Within that area, there were 9 Pre-Fabricated houses (post-WW2), four grouped towards Rae Street and five towards Stenhouse Street.

Curling Pond

There was a Curling Pond basically at the eastern end of the present Beath High Playing Field, straddling the present Leuchatsbeath Drive, from the bottom of the Foulford Primary Playing Field across in to the lower Johnston Park area.

must say, I seen Canniesburn Drive also and wondered where they got this name from!!

Very weird.

Alex Dow says

Yes, John - Very Weird.

Another site for Broadband Testing, using my correct Postcode, places me in the middle of Alloa!

KY4 versus FK10 - Any resemblance?
