I moved from Lochgelly to Cowdenbeath in 1958 at the age of 9 with my Mum & Dad and wee sister, Rena. We moved into Greenbank Drive and my littler sister, Caroline was born .
I went to Foulford Primary School (walked there and back daily - no school run back then as only the posh folk had cars) We used to go along Hillcrest, through the waggon yard of the colliery and then followed the pug railway down to the pit at Central Park, nipped through The waggon yard onto Stenhouse Street then to School in Hill Street. Just imagine what the health & safety folk would have to say about that nowadays. At Foulford I immediately made friends with whom I am still in contact today.
I found Cowdenbeath a great place to live and grow up. The parents in Hillcrest used to hire busses in the summer to go to Aberdour Silver Sands where we all had a great time (summer seemed longer and hotter then) and we weren't only allowed to play football and rounders in the street, but were encouraged to do so by the teenagers and adults who would join in to help the losing side.
I progressed to Beath High in Stenhouse Street then up to the new building at the top of Foulford Road which even had a swimming pool where I learned to swim under the harsh tutelage of Willie Robertson whose ideas of discipline would probably get him struck off nowadays.
Growing up, my mates and I discovered the joys of the Palais where we roller-skated and danced to live bands (top of the chart bands as well). We discovered Penmans, The Commercial, Wee Jimmies and all the other pubs in Cowdenbeath and on occasion managed to get to Dunfermline to the Ballroom and even to Edinburgh. We played football, watched Motorcycle Speedway and later on, Stock Cars. learned about motorbikes , cars and of course - girls. What else could a teenager need back then?

Remember it all Willie Willie Robertson was a bit of a disciplinarian I think he was 74 years old when he retired. I remember going to Fulford through No 7 pit yard and when we were on nthe motor bikes there with roy and Jim and Fred, A Looooooooooooong time a go
Moved to Cowdenbeath in 1952 after my father died. Joined Foulford Primary School and lived for a time at my auntie's on Foulford Road, then we lived at Hall Street and Mungall Street. Went up to Beath High in 1955; at the same time we moved into one of the new houses 15 Maxwell Crescent.
Spent most of my time with a huge gang of pals in Kirkford (Campbells, Tom Fowler, ? Young then had many pals (Jimmy & Alex(?) Cowan, Robert Aitken, Archie McMillan, George Hodge, Rab Stein, Francis & Margaret Girvan all on Maxwell Crescent. Cathy McQueen (Ewing Street) and I were set at one time but I guess the RAF and distance drew us apart.
Was best friend at school with Bill Rattray who joined the Royal Navy. Just heard that Bill has 'shipped anchor' for the last time. A grand friend who I shall remember always.
I left Cowdenbetah in May 1960 to travel to England to join the Royal Air Force as an Aircraft Apprentice (Engine fitter)
Married to Jean in 1965, a lass from Dorset on the English South coast. Funny but the heather and heathland around here is just like it was on Moss Moran and Hill o'Beath.
I served in many parts of the world and finally left the Service in 1977 then I qualified as a secondary school teacher. I taught Craft & Design in a number of schools and finally retired, in 2004, as Head of Department at an Upper School in Dorset, England.
